Retired Detective Sergeant Rick Reed was a member of the Evansville Police Department and Vanderburgh County Sheriff Department for 30 years. He worked in the Criminal Investigations Unit until he made the mistake of getting promoted to Sergeant and was transferred to Internal Affairs. He served as a Crisis Management/Hostage Negotiator, and as a U.S. Secret Service trained handwriting expert.
During his career he was lead investigator on numerous homicides, rapes, robberies, burglaries and battery cases. His acclaimed book, Blood Trail, is the true account of one of the homicides he investigated in 2000 that unearthed a serial killer who claimed fourteen victims. In 2011, this killer strangled his cellmate and received another life sentence.
From 2005 to 2011 he was an Assistant Professor in a Criminal Justice program for an Indiana college. He holds a bachelor's degree in Sociology and a Masters Degree in Public Administration.
His first serial killer-fiction book, The Cruelest Cut, was released in 2010. The thriller introduces detective Jack Murphy and his partner, Liddell Blanchard, as they chase serial killers through the streets of Evansville, Indiana. The Coldest Fear, the second Jack Murphy thriller, was released in September 2011. Both books were published by Kensington Books.
In 2011, The Cruelest Cut, and The Coldest Fear were licensed by German Publisher, Weltbild, and Polish Publisher, Proszynski Media S.P. of Warsaw. Both have been translated into German and Polish and have been released as paperbacks and eBooks.
FINAL JUSTICE, the third Detective Jack Murphy novel was released September 24th, 2013 and is available as an eBook and softcover.

Reed moved to the San Francisco area where he is continuing the Detective Jack Murphy stories and working on two series of short stories.
